Frequently asked

How much are boxing classes at Uphill Boxing?

Membership is $150 a month, one flat price with no contract and no tiers. That covers every session on the schedule — boxing, conditioning, and the wellness work — for kids and adults alike.

Does Uphill Boxing accept Medicaid?

Yes. Medicaid is accepted as a payment method. Mention it when you call (614) 670-4126 and we'll walk you through it.

Do you take walk-ins?

Yes. You can walk in during open hours — Monday through Friday 8 AM to 12 AM, Saturday around the clock, Sunday 9 AM to 5 PM. Calling ahead just means Jalen knows to look for you.

What age do kids have to be to start boxing here?

The youth block runs weekdays from 5 to 9 PM and is built for school-age kids. Younger kids are welcome to start with fundamentals and conditioning; nobody young is put in the ring to spar before they are ready.

Do I need experience to join?

No. Most people who walk into Uphill Boxing have never thrown a punch. You start on the fundamentals your first day, and beginners are never put in with amateurs or pros.

What should I bring to my first class?

Athletic clothes, gym shoes, and water. That's it — there are gloves and gear to borrow while you're getting started, so buy nothing until you know you're staying.

How long is a class?

Plan on about an hour to ninety minutes on the floor. The blocks are long and open, so you can come in when your schedule lets you rather than racing to a fixed start time.

Is there parking at the gym?

Yes. There is free parking at 571 Holtzman Ave and on the surrounding Near East Side streets.

Can I train for an actual fight?

Yes. Jalen Hill Sr. trains amateurs toward their first sanctioned bout and works with pros keeping sharp between fights. Sparring is earned, not handed out on day one.

What is the wellness program?

Stretching, breathing technique, meditation, yoga, and massage, scheduled around the boxing blocks and included in the same $150 membership. It's there because recovery and headspace are half of what keeps people training.

Where is Uphill Boxing located?

571 Holtzman Ave, Columbus, OH 43205, on the Near East Side near King-Lincoln Bronzeville, minutes from Bexley and Whitehall.

Who coaches the classes?

Jalen Hill Sr. owns the gym and coaches every session himself. There is no rotating instructor roster — the same coach who answers the phone is the one in the room with you.
